It looks awesome.

Oh god, how long ago was this sent? The course I’m attending is nothing fancy, it’s a FETAC level 5 course that is held mostly in the art room of a secondary school. Specifically, it’s the ‘Portfolio Preparation’ course.

I’ll admit, it’s not *quite*what I was hoping for (there’s a worryingly little amount of life drawing) but I’ve got to meet some cool people there.

My apologies for taking this long to get back to you, Adam. You’d think having being on Tumblr this long I’d be used to it by now!

EDIT: Whoooooops, I just realised I never properly answered your question. I’m attending the course in Carlow.

A Bucketload of Art Reference/Tutorial Books in PDF form

dailydoodly:

What the title says. These books cover everything from anatomy to composition to animation & comics:

Here’s an excellent book on inking:

http://www.mediafire.com/?evgdvv348z914

Also, if you don’t already have ‘em, Andrew Loomis’ books are pretty much the best-of-the-best:

http://www.alexhays.com/loomis/

There is an absolute wealth of information contained in all these books, more than enough to last you a long, looooooong time.

Today I gave my students a quick presentation on some of the basic considerations for composition, which I am now sharing with you! I’ve given them separate talks about color and tonal value/contrast, which are also super important compositional concerns. (I’ll be sharing those presentations too once I properly format them)

I personally love learning about different compositional techniques. It’s fun to think about the ways that the brain views & sorts images, and how we can trick it into feeling a certain way or looking at certain aspects of an image first! It’s easy to fall into compositional ruts (which I am also guilty of) because a lot of art gets by with mediocre, though serviceable, compositions. If you can generally understand what’s happening in an image then it’s generally fine. However, it’s the truly great compositions, where everything in the whole image has been considered and ‘clicks’ together, that bump up an illustration to a visual slam dunk. NC Wyeth is one of my favorite artists for this reason: his compositions are rock solid, varied based on the image’s intent, and always enhance the mood or action he is depicting.

For extra reading, some online compositional resources that I’ve found helpful or interesting include:
Creative Illustration by Andrew Loomis (download it for FREE. Such a great book all-around.)
Gurney Journey (check out the “Composition” tag, but really everything he posts is great)
The Schweitzer guide to spotting tangents
Cinemosaic (a blog by Lou Romano with some truly WONDERFUL compositions captured from various films)
Where to Put the Cow by Anita Griffin

Happy composition-ing!

Stuff like this is why I’m glad I browse Tumblr more these days.

waterlok:

Before I go, though, here’s a few contour drawings I did.

Now, I sort of cheated here in that I was looking at the page a few times while drawing. My main reason for doing these is because I’m far too stiff and robotic when it comes to drawing the human figure, especially when it’s clothed, so this is my attempt to sort that out. I’ll be adding this to the 30 second drawings I’ve been doing as part of a daily artistic exercise/kick up the arse.

I think I’ve managed to give myself a mild dose of food...

I think I’ve managed to give myself a mild dose of food poisoning. To answer: yes. Yes I did. I really should have pointed this out sooner, considering I still have a link to it on my Tumblr’s main page.

Basically, I decided to shut down my Facebook (not permanently, mind) due to it becoming nothing more than a procrastination tool. On top of that, I also decided to quit browsing both Reddit and NeoGaf, due to both websites being like that giant piece of candy lying around in your fridge: you know you shouldn’t be nibbling away at it, but because it’s there you think “what’s the harm? Just one more bite…”

Anyways, it didn’t work out very well, considering Twitter became a surrogate Facebook/Reddit/NeoGaf for me, leading to me posting countless inane things (all within a 140 character limit!), anything to avoid drawing.

So, I decided to cut Twitter out of my life as well. So far, it’s been going well, and it’s actually nice to be out of the loop for once. I haven’t a clue what’s going on in world news or — most importantly — pop culture right now and, y’know what? It’s actually kind of refreshing.

Another sketch of ROBORG. My question is this: is the small version okay to use? I think I’d mainly be using the device for digital inking and adding quick splashes of digital colour to my drawings. Does the small size allow me much breathing room, or will I have to go for a larger model?

EDIT: Thanks very much for the feedback, Lora and Lore (huh, how about that)! I’m sort of in-between when it comes to my working sizes. Honestly, the vast majority of my drawings are sketches and doodles done in an A5 pad, while I sometimes go larger when doing more fleshed out pieces and comics.

However, I think I often work small more out of bad artistic habits than anything else and will be attempting to gradually work my way up to working larger (for example, I’ve moved on from an A4 to an A3 sketch pad for my daily ‘30 second drawing’ exercises).

I think I’ll just need to knuckle down and save for a bit longer in order to get the medium sized Intuos.

EDIT 2: Thanks very much for your input everyone! I wish I could reply to you all individually, but Tumblr seems to be crap for that kinda thing. Going by what you’ve all been saying, the medium sized one seems to be a good middle ground. A lot more pricey, but worth it in the long run.
This thumbnail version is incredibly rough, having being knocked up in a few minutes, so there’ll be plenty of changes to be made before I go on to the final version.
♛ POWER DRIVE B: FIRED UP SUCCESSOR TO POWER DRIVE A ♛

NOW OPEN FOR SUBMISSIONS, THIS TIME IT’S P-P-PERSONAL

hello folks! you may remember, last year, I put together an anthology called Power Drive A, centered around short comics inspired by super robots/tokusatsu/cyberpunk/anything else super pumped up and cool, and it turned out a zillion times better than I expected thanks to you talented mfers!

WELL, WE’RE KICKIN’ IT UP. First of all, look up, there will be a bad ass cover by good buddy and master of comics-fu, DAN CIURZAK (the above is only a preview, not the final version! I’m gonna fully color the final version >:3) and I’ve already got a few folks signed on to do some cool stories, but submissions are now fully to open to EVERYONE. Awriiight!

Those of you who were around for the production of the first PD probably get how this works, but if you don’t, here’s everything you need to know:

You don’t have to have a manga-influenced style to contribute - tear it up however you want!!

Submissions must be 400dpi files, 8x11 ratio, bleed is half an inch. Submissions must be black and white, with gray tones if you find it necessary to use them.

The deadline is August 1st, 2013. This is about the same length of time as the first PD. Bring it ON

I’ve decided to chop the size of submissions down to between 2 and 8 pages long, feel free to go a bit longer though!

All profits go towards printing. However, I’m changing the way I print these (the first PDA was made totally by hand and was chunky/labor-intensive), so if you contribute a story, you will receive 10 (ten) copies to do whatever you want with, and in addition to that, I will give you all of the HD print files so that you may print and sell as many as you want. I want this next one to be more accessible to co-collaborators than the first one!

My e-mail is rorymorriscomics at gmail dot com . feel free to shoot me questions, talk to me about your comic, ask for advice, and send all finished, cleaned-up files to that email. thank you!

GIVE EM HELL, KIDS. If you make comics or know someone who does, signal boost the heck outta this!!

I promised myself that I’d submit to last year’s volume.

Spoiler alert: I didn’t.

Time to make that promise again (only this time, y’know, actually follow through on it and all). Anyways, I’m reblogging this so that all you other handsome comic folk know about this.

I don’t often post stuff other than my or other...

I don’t often post stuff other than my or other people’s art but…NEW PACIFIC RIM TRAILER HOLY SHIT

(in case you couldn’t tell, I’m quite hyped for this movie)

Pet Peeve 1,234,678: THIS.
I could go on all day about how much...

Pet Peeve 1,234,678: THIS.

I could go on all day about how much it frustrates me to see otherwise extremely talented artists throwing their skills out the window because they feel a need to draw in a ‘twee’ style because it’s the popular thing to do.

Some artists can pull off this sort of style in a genuine and good looking way, whereas it’s obvious that for the vast majority of others it simply looks awful and bloody lazy. If you’re a damned good artist, stop demeaning yourself and your skills by doing this.

Then again, maybe this is just me finally knowing how it feels to get old and not understanding all these new fangled wotsits all the kids are into these days.

EDIT: To answer littledigits’ question, perhaps ‘twee’ was the wrong word to use. I’m talking about that sort of style that’s popular right now in indie art where artists draw in a very scratchy and simple manner (think the art style in Adventure Time, only nowhere near as good). Now, as I said, there are some artists out there that excel at this and make it look damned good, it’s obvious that they have put a lot of work into getting their style to where it is and I have a huge amount of respect for that.

However, there are others who draw in this style because it’s become the accepted way of doing things. Why spend hours upon hours working on a picture or a sketch when you can fart out some badly drawn lines and get a ton of praise for doing so?

Nothing like a good face-destroying pout to make all your...

Nothing like a good face-destroying pout to make all your worries just melt away.

What to do with them all.

What to do with them all.
